COMMON NAME-Chinese Elm.BOTANICAL NAME-Ulmus parvifolia.DECIDUOUS-(Semi-deciduous in warmer climates).AGE-6yrs.HEIGHT-(tree only)-19cm.POT-Glazed-15.5cm x 11cm.Postal despatch days for Interstate customers-Mondays and Tuesdays only (please refer to shipping details below).PLEASE NOTE-This Chinese elm has been treated with a horticultural product that dramatically reduces the whole mechanics of a tree (eg)-Internodal distance, foliage size-the results are absolutely amazing!! Experimenting with this product has produced some very different results but a good balance has now been found, especially for the chinese elm. .This bonsai also includes a beautiful little piece of drift wood.I will be listing a number of these very compact elms over the coming few weeks. Please keep in mind to downsize all the details in the following description-this chinese elm is a lot smaller than normal : ) The chinese elm makes a beautiful bonsai specimen that is very versatile and suitable for most styles. The tree lends itself very well to the techniques applied in bonsai cultivation. It would have to be the most popular elm species being used in bonsai cultivation today. The fine branching is just beautiful on the chinese elm,it becomes quite heavily ramified with age and this actually makes a beautiful display over winter when the leaves have dropped & the branching structure can be fully appreciated. The branching can be further refined by way of twig pruning & light trimming on a regular basis (as the growth rate dictates). The leaves will reduce in size very quickly if the tree is trimmed regularly as this stimulates the smaller, inner buds to activate which produce the tighter more compact growth. If it is trimmed regularly, the leaves will continue to reduce in size, eventually becoming very small indeed. This is a very favourable attribute for a tree to have as a bonsai specimen. The new leaves emerge a beautiful fresh, light green colour and harden off to a lovely, rich green. They have an attractive, finely serrated margin and a prominent mid-rib with delicate veining. The base of the leaf joins the leaf stalk slightly off-set which is a very good way to identify the Ulmus species from other tree species that may look very similar. One example of this is the zelkova, which very closely resembles the elm but is,in fact,a completely different species of tree.In autumn, the leaves turn a lovely butter yellow colour before dropping, which is quite attractive. The chinese elm is normally semi-deciduous in warmer climates, meaning it will still hold a fairly high percentage of it's foliage over winter. This chinese elm displays very well and would look absolutely beautiful in your favourite outdoor area.As the weather warms up (indoor-outdoor temperatures become relatively the same),this bonsai can be taken indoors for a couple of days at a time-place in a nice bright area but NOT right in front of a window-the window will act like a magnifying glass and the foliage will get burnt (Details supplied with care specifics).Bonsai also make an excellent conversation piece when family or friends drop around.Detailed care specifics are also included.
