LONDON.
The Article Horology, which I contributed to the EDinburguh Enclopedia abridged and imperfect as it is, from
the limits to whidi I was necessarily confined attracted the attention, and met the approbation of several scientific and
practical Clock and Watchmakers ; and a separate publication, in a more extended form, was called for by some, whose
opinions I am bound to respect
Retired from the active pursuit of a profession, to which my whole life has been devoted, I have endeavoured to com-
bine my own observations with those of the best practical writers, and to give the operative Clock and Watchmaker
1 condensed view of the Art in Great Britain and on the Continent of Europe. 1 am sensible the work still labours
under many defects, and that I require the indulgence of the Critical Reader ; yet I am unconscious of omitting, or
slightly passing over any subject of essential importance.

3. A rudimentary treatise on clock and watch making; (1850) 311 pages
With a chapter on church clocks; and an account of
the proceedings respecting the great Westminster Clock (1850)
I have several times been asked if there was any book on clock making, which, without being encumbered with professional
details, would enable a person having a moderate knowledge of mechanical principles to understand the construction
of clocks, and the things which chiefly require attention in their making and management. I believe there is no such
book. Perhaps the articles in some of the Encyclopeadias might partly answer the purpose; but they are neither accessible to the great majority of readers, nor do they contain some information which may be expected in a
rudimentary treatise, though they do contain interesting accounts of some curious inventioiis, which would be out
of place in a merely practical book such as this professes to be.
