Child Harnesses are important because small children have heavy heads and torsos, that can be thrown forward violently in crashes.  With a harness securing them your child can avoid injuries to the head, spine and abdomen.

Until your child weighs 26kgs (approx 7 years) they should use a booster seat in conjunction with a harness. 

Over 26kgs (approx 7 years) they can use a harness without a booster seat.
