This stunning, rare and collectible Volvo is to be offered for unreserved wholesale auction and should not be missed by collectors and enthusiasts.

Designed by Jan Wilsgaard and hailed as one of Volvo’s modern crowning achievements, the 850 series is a spectacular vehicle.  Extremely robust by nature, the near bullet-proof mechanical nature of an 850 combined with its European style, road manners and impeccable safety means an 850 is not just a practical car to own, but it is also a rewarding one.

Fuse this level of durability and practicality with gob-smacking performance, outstanding styling and pure, decedent luxury and you have the flagship and ultra-rare Volvo 850R luxury sports saloon, as driven by none other than Mr. Peter Brock.

Powered by Volvos 20-valve 5 cylinder engine boosted by a full pressure turbo and controlled by a specially designed and programmed Bosch 628 ECU, the 850R boasts 240BHP and can launch its occupants from 0 to 100km/h in just on 7 seconds while enjoying ultra-luxurious cabin surroundings and superb chassis dynamics.

Built in extremely limited numbers, 850R’s are quite rare and many have been thrashed and abused making the acquisition of a particularly good example near impossible.  Pleasingly the vehicle offered here is a true exception to the rule and remains a spectacular example of the breed.

Delivered new to Mrs. Jan Flis on the 20^th of September 1996, this Flame Red 850R has been with just 2 loving and enthusiastic owners since and features front and side impact airbags, special R sports seats trimmed in leather and alcantara, electric controls for both front seats with position memory, remote central door locking with an immobilizer and alarm, tinted glass, dual zone climate control air conditioning, electric windows, traction control, a stunning CD premium sound system, an onboard trip computer and lots more.  Adding to the street appeal is the R skirt kit and rear spoiler as well as the stunning titanium wheels.

This 850R is to be supplied with one original key, 2 brand new blank spares, 2 remote controls, a full set of factory floor mats and a compliment of original handbooks including its service logbook with entries at the following intervals:

The supplied logbook confirms the vehicles low ks, now just 167,000, and also verifies a cam belt replacement undertaken by Austral Volvo at 120,000ks.

Given the rather subjective nature involved when assessing the condition of older vehicles, your personal inspection is strongly advised.  In this way, you may form your own opinions of the car and can judge whether or not it will meet with your expectations.

Offered as a guide, my opinions of the car and its condition are as follows:

BODY & PAINT:  is in exceptional general condition and belies the cars age.  The Flame Red paintwork is stunning showing no real imperfections or anomalies given its age and holds a beautiful, deep, rich gloss.  There seems to be no UV fatigue and all skirts are in excellent order.  The body is extremely straight and I cannot locate any previous accident damage.  On the whole, this is certainly an entirely impressive vehicle and must be one of the best left – not new, but particularly good.

TRIM & INTERIOR:  remains in excellent original condition with no undue wear and tear.  The side bolsters of the seats are in leather while the centers are in alcantara (suede) and all remain in excellent order with only very minor wear.  All carpets are excellent and are covered by factory mats while the door trims and dash show no damage or fatigue.  The woodgrain trim is perfect and there is nothing missing, broken or out of place inside of the cabin.  Again, while now some 13 years old, this cabin of this 850R is distinctly a cut above what is usually found and presents superbly.

MECHANICALS:  The 850R is SPECTACULAR on the road and does not misbehave.  It starts easily and runs beautifully with no misfiring, no smoke, no obscure noises and it does not appear to use or loose fluids.  The car is impressively fast and it FEELS it – the turbo charged engine and ultra-smooth automatic gearbox work in perfect harmony and can offer not just neck-bending acceleration, but also relaxed cruising.  The car maintains perfect operating temperature, all electrics seem to work correctly, the air conditioning is ice cold and there are no warning lights illuminated on the dash.  The car corners superbly and the ride, while quite sporting and firm, remains compliant and enjoyable on a daily basis.  I have used this car extensively and under all conditions.  Having owned many Volvo’s, I find this 850R to be a hugely fresh, tight and impressive example, the likes of which I have not seen in some years.

As mentioned previously, I advise and welcome any interested party to come and take the car for a test drive themselves or to send a friend, relative or mechanic in to inspect it on your behalf – being interstate is certainly no excuse!  As I say in every one of my listings: common sense should tell you that my personal opinions reflected in the above listing and 12 digital photographs are no substitute for your own detailed inspection and test drive.  Your bid is to BUY – no exceptions!

I have no idea what would be required of this vehicle to pass a RWC – I am not a mechanic so I can not speak to this subject with any authority.  BE UNDER NO ILLUSION IN YOUR DECISION TO BID – HAVE IT INSPECTED!
