German War Honour Cross with ribbon for soldiers who served in the front line during the First World War (1914 - 1918). Awarded from 1932 (PRE NAZI ERA) onwards by the Reich President Von Hindenburg (Germany's most famous WW1 wartime general - see pics below), this WW1 commemorative award features the crossed combattants swords as featured on ths piece. Maker marked to rear of medal.
Design
Uniface bronze iron cross pattée with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the dates 1914 1918 encircled by a wreath of oak leaves surmounted by crossed swords; the reverse plain, maker marked to reverse with multicoloured striped ribbon.
Historical Context
The Cross was instituted on 13 July 1932 by President Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and is often referred to as the ‘Hindenburg Cross’. There were three versions – for combatants, non-combatants and next of kin – the latter being awarded to the widows and parents of those who died during the conflict. Designed by Eugene Godet.
