Tiles for a Beautiful Home by Tessa Paul.  Hardcover book published by Merehurst Press 1989, 159 pages with colour photographs and some illustrations (black, blue and white) demonstrating “Tools, techniques and materials”.  Tiles are an unusual medium, in that they combine a straightforwardly functional purpose with a unique aesthetic value of their own. Tiles have traditionally been used for their hygienic merits in public buildings like hospitals and, more strikingly, were essential in the design of the U.S. Space Shuttle, for their strength and resistence to heat. However, as this book shows, since the vogue for tiles is thriving and they are an essential feature of most bathrooms and many kitchens, we should not neglect the importance of their decorative value. Tessa Paul conducts her study as a history of ornamentation in our homes. The book looks at Egyptian design, through to intricate Turkish and exotic Moorish tiling, Medieval picture tiles, through to the more familiar, and increasingly popular, Victorian decorative style, and also considers the newest ideas in tile design. The historical survey is presented in a way that never loses sight of the fact that this book is above all an inspirational book. It is aimed at providing information essential towards a better understanding of the diverse and colourful effects that tiles can produce in our homes today.  A substantial part of the book deals with the practicalities of laying tile and mosaic surfaces, and offers helpful advice on restoration and the mending of broken tiles. The step-by-step approach is comprehensive and is designed for the layman who feels fired to realize the potential of his home. And, as the author insists, you need not restrict tiles to the bathroom and kitchen ...  This book is in very good condition.  The dust jacket is in fair condition.  There is some wear to the edges (some creasing), corners (some bumping) and to the top and bottom of the spine.  There is some shelf wear overall as well as marks and scuffs.  There is a scratch to the front of the dust jacket. There is some yellowing.   The cover is in very good condition.  There is some minor wear to the edges and corners. There is some slight fading to the top and bottom of the spine.  The book itself is in very good condition.  There are a few minor marks to the outer edges.  The front endpaper has a crossed out name.  The first title page has a name and date written on it.  There is some minor yellowing of the pages.  Overall a very good copy.
