Architecture by Alfred Mansfield Brooks (Our debt to Greece and Rome series).  Hardcover book published by George G. Harrap no date (1920s -30s?), 189 pages.  More than any of the Arts, Architecture has suffered from misunderstanding and misrepresentation. When it was really vital in the Western World, at almost any period down to the middle of the 18th Century, except in the Dark Ages, Architecture was accepted more or less as a matter of course. There was only one way of doing things, one immemorial tradition and one generally admitted standard of attainment.  Accordingly it did not occur to people to be 'onscious of their architecture. The Greeks, for example, were curiously unconscious of theirs. The poets ignored it, the philosophers despised it as a servile affair, the people generally regarded it as a matter to be taken for granted in the ordinary course of nature.  In this admirable little volume, Mr. Brooks re-calls attention to the essential basis of Architecture. The admitted beauty of Greek Architecture was not the result of accident or fashion or caprice, it was attained by steady thought along accepted lines, and what the author very happily describes as " the tireless will of perfection." It took some two or three hundred years to evolve the incomparable Doric of the Parthenon, and rather less to bring to its accomplished beauty the Ionic of the Erectheum. In neither case was there any abrupt incursion of a new motive. Slowly and patiently the Greek craftsman pursued his appointed task, each generation contributing its portion to the sum of ultimate perfection.  In this volume Mr. Brooks has made no attempt to give a detailed account of Greek and Roman architecture. What he is impressing on his students is the spirit at the back of it. From Greek architecture he proceeds to Hellenistic art, with which he deals briefly at the connecting link between the pure Greek architecture of Athens, and the architecture of Imperial Rome. etc etc.  This book is in good condition. The dust jacket is in fair condition.  There is some wear to the edges (some creasing, tiny rip to the back top edge), corners (some bumping) and to the top and bottom of the spine (some creasing, tiny rips to the top).  There is some minor shelf wear as well as some marks and yellowing.  There is a very small amount of insect damage to the back.   The cover is in good condition.  There is some wear to the edges, corners (bumping) and to the top and bottom  of the spine (some bumping).  There are some minor marks. The book itself is in very good condition.  There are some marks, foxing and wear to the outer edges.  The front and back endpages have some minor foxing.  A few of the endpages have not been cut (the pages have not been opened, both the pages I found, are blank).   Overall a good copy.
