This Buddha image was carved from teak
wood, in a classical Chiang Mai, Thai style. The Buddha sits upon a
decorated pedestal, with flowing robes. The sculpture shows the Buddha in
the Bhumisparsha Mudra, better known as the earth witness posture. This
posture symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree when he
called the earth goddess Sthavara to bear witness to his full awakening by
touching the ground with the extended right hand. This is complemented by the
left hand, which rests upturned in the lap in the Dhyana Mudra of meditation,
symbolizing the union of method and wisdom, nirvana and samsara, and the
realization of conventional and ultimate truth. The sculpture is decorated with
stained glass 'jewels' and gold paint. The image communicates a serene,
deeply meditative mood and is masterfully carved. It is in excellent condition, with no chips and only a little
