‘200 Miniature Games of Chess’ by J. du Mont

I have here an old 287-page hardcover chess book with diagrams, index to players, register of stratagems and combinations, titled, ‘200 Miniature Games of Chess’: Combinations in the openings, written by J. du Mont. Published in 1942 (Second Impression) by George Routledge & Sons. Ltd, London.

PREFACE:

The short and sharp encounter at Chess has an overwhelming number of friends among all classes of chess players. It has also not a few detractors, because, in many cases, the brilliant finish is the direct result of an oversight or a bad blunder.

I have tried to avoid examples of this type, and that is why much well-known and oft-repeated brilliancy have been left out.  They are indeed of little value. The sparkling finish of most games in this book is due to the clever exploitation of some plausible continuation, which runs counter to accepted practice.

At the same time, these games are of positive educational value. They teach what to avoid, which is far less forbidding a task than to show all that may be done. Accordingly, the games have been grouped under openings and variations.

Here and there, like an ugly sister, a game will be found which is not on a par with its fellows in artistic charm. It is given either for its historic interest or to complete the picture of a particular opening.

- J. du MONT.

This interesting book is in fair condition for its age, browning on edges of the book and unfortunately it doesn’t have a dust jacket. The covers have hints of shelf wear being the odd ding and bump and fading, overall, a great source of information for the chess enthusiasts.

Postage cost within Australia $5.40. I do not charge a packaging fee and will do my best to get you the cheapest postage that will get your item to you safely. I have also listed other CHESS books. Combined postage possible, email me if you have any questions, good luck with your bidding.
