'The Luck of the Irish' and the Garryowen Battalion.
Some 6 weeks before the Battle of Little Bighorn, the commander of the 7th Cavalry, Lt.Colonel George Armstrong Custer heard a group or Irishmen singing around a campfire. They were singing an Old Irish Song called the Garryowen. The Garryowen song is a song from the West Ireland Town of Limerick lamenting the fight against the British Balliffs, Mayors and Sheriffs.
Custer was so taken with the song that he formed the Irishmen into the Regimental Band adding pipers. In the weeks that followed the song, Garryowen bacame instilled in the 7th Cavalry and Custer, so impressed with the band sent the 46 Irishmen East to play for the Generals and Politicians in Washington. The 7th Cavalry, Irish Pipe Band left the 7th Cavalry in mid June 1876.
They were some hundreds of miles away when, on the 26th of June, 1876 the 7th Cavalry, led by Custer fought the Lokota and North Cheyenne, Native American Indians at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The regimental song, the Garryowen, was played that night in Washington by the only remaining survivors of the Garryowen Regiment, 46 Irishmen from Limerick, Ireland.
From that time forward, the 7th Cavalry have been known as the 'GARRYOWEN'.
